We have been awarded a grant at Millbrook Primary School from Awards for All which is linked to the Lottery Fund. Part of this grant was spent on employing Karl Mcvety to implement an after school club for the children to do Kick Boxing and into investing into the equipment needed to implement a Kick Boxing class.
The project started in September and since the arrival of Karl in our school the children are taking after school sports much more seriously. Children who we never would have thought would commit to attending a regular club have done. Parents have spent money on the uniform and also bought the children licenses from the Kick Boxing Association.
I have seen a real impact on the children’s learning and skill level. Most of the children have already obtained their first belt and some have even got the second belt! The amount of time and dedication that Karl and his team have put in to developing Kick Boxing within our school is fantastic and it has had an impact both on behaviour and attendance!

We applied for a grant through sponsorbank after hearing Karl Mcvety’s adivse. He gave me the paperwork to make the preliminary application to which i filled in a returned promptly. Nine weeks later we were thrilled to learn we had been awarded nine thousand four hundred and eighty-two pounds from Sports for All. This money was awarded to our school to promote healthy living and to fund new sports equipment and coaching fees in the school.
We purchased kickboxing equipment for the children, some new athletics equipment and rubber mats for which we was desperate. New footballs and football coaches . Dance Coaches modern and street dancing. We also now have a regular kickboxing class to which over 40 children attended weekly and they have also completed thier 1st grading now.
Our only obligation was to have a plaque errected and to have special community days in which parents and children can do sports together with either kickboxing or football and basketball. We also had a special day where the president of Sports for All visited the school to watch the children perform there new classesn which had media coverage and made it very exciting for the children.
We at Ridgehill are proud of the fact that we have such interesting and professionally run clubs. Children who dont usually get involved with sports are now enjoying martial arts and we have noticed a difference in the attitudes in all aspects both in the sports lessons and in the classroom.

KMMA FREESTLE MARTIAL ARTS GROUP have been active in my school for almost two years and in that time we cannot believe the transformation it has made to some of the chilren who attend. Karl’s ability to connect to the children is fantastic. The most unlikliest children attend his weekly session which has also made a huge difference in the classroom too. His classes are a real favourite to the children and they make me so proud when we have assemblies and the chidlren receive thier certificates and belts. Bullying used to be a problem in this school as in many others, but since Karl and his team have been present in our school its non-existant.
I would recommend KMMA MARTIAL ARTS GROUP to any school considering introducing new sports. Very professional and very exciting to watch. We also have parents who now attend classes to and act as volunteers to the group which gives them an opportunity to learn the many skills he has to offer.
Upon his advise We have just made an application to SponsorBank for a grant for promoting healthy living to which we are very excited about. As we wish to intoduce cookng lessons to parents to help them to to be able to make heathier meals at home for the family.

Karl has worked in our school for four terms to date, teaching eight classes (aged 9-11 yrs) self-defense skills within our cirriculum. His teaching has given our pupils an new and purposeful dimension to thier health and self awareness education. The work he has been doing with our pupils has improved thier dexterity, balance, fitness and co-ordination. It has also been a boost to their self esteem and confidence.
All of the skills the chilldren have learn under Karl’s tutelage will last our pupils a considerable amount of time. Some have gone on to join self defense classes out of school as a result. Every child has been able to access the program in school.
Karl has a good relationship with the pupils and he has proved an effective and enthusiastic tutor. He is well organised and prepared with appropriate equipment for his classes. He manages classes well, and has been successful in keeping children with challenging behaviors on task with the rest of the class. His teaching demostrates high expectations and good pace and the children repond well to his significant teaching points. In his classes children are encouraged to improve and to ask questions, demonstrations are made using the childrens own responses, and peers are asked to support thier friends’ developing skills. Karl has excellent knowledge of his craft and a weath of experience. The children respect him and always look forward to his classes.
Karl has been most amendable in working around us and our timetable. He is a positive and motivated individual and he has a genuine interest in helping children become more confident and skilled. He is also a mine of advise and knowledge in the sports and fitness area.
I recommend Karl highly to anyone considering introducing self-defense classes to their school or club provison. We hope to continue working with Karl in the future, which is the best recommendation i can make.
Sincerely Mr P. Coiffait Moorside Primary School Headteacher.
